Super Smash Brother Brawl doesn’t work on Wii? WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?!?!?!?

SSBB WRYYYYYY!?

The highly anticipated Super Smash Brothers Brawl is finally out in North America. Too bad that it didn’t come out smoothly though. There have been more than a handful of Wiis that have trouble reading the disc. The same thing happened with the Japanese release and it seems like North America doesn’t have it any better.

failure wii

According to Nintendo, this error is caused by the Wii’s lens being dirty and you must send it in for them to clean it for you. They also warn you not to clean the lens by yourself as you might break it. However, I’m not convinced. Read about my suspicion after the jump.

Now, I don’t doubt that cleaning the lens yourself is dangerous and you might brick your Wii in the process of doing so. After all, we are talking about a very precise optical instrument here. However, what I doubt is the reason they give for the disc read error. I mean, come on. “Dirty lens?” Don’t BS me. What stops your Wii lens from getting dirty again after a few months? You’ll just have to send it in for cleaning again, and that’ll take up another 3-4 week!

Now, this is my theory of what really happened.

In my mind, Nintendo’s answer is truthful and correct right up to the point that the issue lies within the lens, but I don’t think it has to do with the lens being dirty. You see, SSBB is the first game for the Wii that uses the Dual Layer technology. I’m not implying that the Wii’s lens wasn’t designed to support Dual Layer discs. I am, in fact, stating the exact opposite. The Wii’s lens was designed support dual layer discs, but did they put that lens in?

Now, let’s date back a little here and talk a bit about the last generation of Nintendo’s console, the GameCube. The GCN was released in Japan back on September 14, 2001. The storage media used for this console was a small 8cm optical disc created by Matsushita to prevent pirating and the license fee needed to use the DVD as a storage medium. Even so, the 8cm Nintendo optical disc was still very similar to the technology used for DVD.

That said, I think you can see where I am going with this and if you don’t, I’ll explain it in full detail.

I’m sure everyone is familiar with the Wii shortage that’s been going on ever since it was launched. Now, there has been suspicion that Nintendo is doing this to increase the publicity and create more demand. However, what if, just what if this suspicion was wrong? What I’m saying is, what if the Wii shortage is a straight and true shortage and Nintendo was not able to produce enough consoles in time? If this was the case, then Nintendo won’t be making as much money they could be!

Producing optical lenses is a very precise and delicate procedure, meaning it should take quite a long time to produce them. Now remember how similar the Wii is to the GameCube? In fact, some call the Wii a “GameCube 2.0″. What I’m saying in essence is this: Nintendo’s factories can’t produce the Wii fast enough and some of the problem lies within lens not being produced fast enough. Since the Wii is very similar to the GameCube, the factories are using GameCube’s optical lens in the making of Wii console, but the GameCube optical lens does not support Dual Layer discs. If Nintendo ever let’s this out to the public, consumers will think that Nintendo are ripping them off. So instead, they gave us this BS answer of “dirty lens” and when you send your console in for “lens cleaning”, they actually replace or refocus the lens so that it could read the Dual Layer disc.

Of course, with all that said, it is still my own hypothesis. But who knows? Maybe I am right, maybe I am wrong~

  1. Also, Smash bros is the first Wii game to be on a dual layer disk. Those are more sensitive to the lens being dirty than singe layer discs.

*annoyed because Europe have to wait until May at least for the game*

  2. im hopfully getting a free loader :)
