Mario Paint Anyone?

The Mario Paint title screen.
I’m quite sure that anyone who’s owned a Super NES has at least heard of the game Mario Paint. Not only were the mini-games that came along with it great(especially the fly swatter), making crappy animations with crappy pictures was slightly amusing. Of course, anyone who’s actually played the game knows that the best part of it is not the “painting” but the built in music composer.

Just last night as I was mindlessly sifting through my bookmarks on Firefox I happened across a link to the Youtube profile of TomBobBlender. It’s amazing what this man can do with the original Mario Paint music composer. Not only does he accurately arranges classic video game music in the key of C without using sharps or flats(all because of the constraints of the original composer), but his creative use of the different “instruments” is mind blowing.

Now, this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I myself find it simply amazing. Some of these songs are so well done that it brings a tear to my eye, simply out of nostalgia, even though I could just as easily look up the songs and listen to an MP3 or MIDI somewhere. There’s something about watching little Mario hop across the top of the screen along to my favorite video game music.

Here’s one of my favorite songs that he’s done. You can find a few more after the jump if you like.

The Pollyanna Theme from Earthbound.
